1956-2022

Sammy Joe Watkins, husband, father, son, brother and friend passed away May 9, 2022 in Wichita KS. He was 65.

Born October 27, 1956 in Hutchinson KS, Sammy was an avid horseman, hunter and artist – first working with elements such as wood and leather, but found his true passion working with metals – blessing family, friends and co-workers with personalized gifts that highlighted his skill and giving spirit.

Sammy graduated from McPherson High School, McPherson KS, and attended Girard Horseshoeing School, Girard KS. It was here he began to learn the art of horseshoeing and developed his skill as a Farrier. Never lacking an artistic eye, Sammy “signed” each handmade piece with his signature horse head and “flowing mane” design.

Sammy married Sarah Elizabeth Beaton in Bridgewater MA on January 6, 1979. After their wedding, Sammy and Sarah returned to Kansas, working at the Meadow Muffin Farm in Salina. They eventually settled in Tucson AZ, adopting their daughter, Ashleigh Elizabeth, born on April 28, 1985.

The family returned to Kansas in 2007.

Sammy is preceded in death by his father, Clifford Watkins; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Eleanor and Colin Beaton; and his brother-in-law, Richard Leavitt.

Sammy is survived by his wife Sarah, daughter Ashleigh Armand (Andrew); his grandson Archer; his mother, Eva June Watkins; his brother Patrick (Lisa); and his sister Sharon Sloup (Curtis).

Sammy is also remembered by a large extended family, including many nephews, nieces, great nephews and great nieces, all of whom will miss him dearly.

A memorial and celebration of Sammy’s life is planned for July 16, 2022, from 2 PM to 4 PM. It will be held at the Double E Pheasant Ranch, 2038 15th Avenue, McPherson KS 67460.
