Weather Not a Problem For the Bullpups, Shutting Out Ark City 35-0

MCPHERSON, Kan. – McPherson and Arkansas City have started to become accustomed to meeting in the postseason in recent years, as Friday, marked their second straight pairing in the Class 4A Regional Playoffs. Although last season’s contest was a 1-0 forfeit victory, the Pups still may have felt the need to make up from the 2019 postseason, when Ark City came into McPherson Stadium and upset the Bullpups, who were eyeing their first-ever state title game.

Head Coach Jace Pavlovich knew coming into this matchup that the weather was going to be a factor. He and his staff put together a game plan, which the team executed to near perfection. “It was execution and some really bad weather,” said Pavlovich following the 35-0 win. “It was one of those efforts I was really proud of.”

The Pups would elect to receive the opening kickoff after winning the toss, knowing rain was threatening the area, and they were able to drive 80 yards in two and a half minutes, in a drive that was capped off by a Dawson Gottwald 1-yard run. “Normally we defer and we wanted to take the ball while we could, while it was still dry, and it paid off for us.”

McPherson was in the endzone in the almost identical time, after driving 67 yards that ended in a Jaytin Gumm touchdown. The Pups lead 14-0 after the first quarter before steady rain became a factor. Last week, Ark City freshman quarterback Jordey Pierce threw for over 270 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions in the win against Buhler, but the Pups contested every drop back and recovered two fumbles on the night. “Our defense is just so stout,” said Coach Pavlovich, who mentioned that Ark City Coach John Wiemers, even credited him and his defense’s ability to swarm to the football.

Blaise Hoover would give the Bullpups a 21-0 lead going into the half after Hunter Alvord delivered a 32-yard touchdown pass.

The third quarter featured running back Dawson Gottwald, who slipped his way into the endzone twice in the quarter, with scores from 11, and 17 yards out. “I’ve said it before that there just aren’t enough footballs to go around,” explained Pavlovich, “Jaytin (Gumm) sometimes gets the ball a little bit more, or scores more touchdowns, and things of that nature, and Dawson doesn’t say a word, he does what he needs to do, he blocks hard, and he ran the ball incredibly hard tonight.” Pavlovich also credited the offensive line for the lanes that they provided for the Bullpup ball carriers.

Coach Pavlovich admitted that there are a lot of guys battling injuries, and the toughness they continue to bring, he added, “When you have teammates like that that are willing to do anything and everything, special things happen.” He looks to be even more consistent moving forward, adding, “Really the only way we got stopped we felt like, was when we stopped ourselves. Obviously, there’s a lot of things on film we’ll see tomorrow, and as I always say, ‘It’s never as good as you think it is, and never as bad as you think it was.” Pavlovich concluded by saying, “We’ll get back to tape tomorrow, and do what we do, and just trust the process.”

Following the win, McPherson moves to 9-1, they will advance into the Sectional Round, where they’ll host Circle at McPherson Stadium next Friday Night, in a battle of two versus three in Class 4A West. Kickoff is slated for 7 pm.
