Minnesota Woman Sentence in 2019 Fatality Accident that Killed Canton-Galva Couple

MCPHERSON COUNTY – A Minneapolis, Minnesota woman who pled no contest in April in connection with a November 2019 crash between Canton and Galva that killed a Canton Couple was sentenced to nearly eight years in prison Friday afternoon.

Julie Ann Hunter was found guilty of two counts of aggravated involuntary manslaughter in the deaths of Robert and Mary Lee Unruh. Reports indicated Hunter had a blood alcohol content above the legal intoxication limit and intentionally swerved into the opposite lane of traffic striking the Unruh vehicle.

McPherson County District Judge John Klenda cited those circumstances in denying a defense motion to depart to community corrections, and instead, imposed the maximum possible sentences. They will run consecutively.

Hunter, who apologized to the Unruh family called the incident “a tragic accident I didn’t want to happen,” was taken into custody after sentencing.
