McPherson City Commissioners Set Show Cause Hearing, Approve Low Water Crossing in Countryside Park

By Lucky Kidd, Ad Astra Radio

MCPHERSON – McPherson City Commissioners Tuesday set a September 20th show cause hearing on 918 South Elm, which has been in a deteriorating condition for at least 16 years. The home currently has a severely cracked foundation, is missing windows that city staff boarded up recently, and has a partially collapsed roof and a wall bowing.

The owner of the property has, up to now, not responded to notices from the city, either by registered or regular mail or by posting of notices, although reportedly mail is being picked up there. The hearing is a requirement of state law before the city can proceed with demolition and cleanup of the property.

Low Water Crossing

With Commissioner Larry Wiens opposition, Commissioners approved a quote from Cody Heiman Construction for the design and construction of a low water crossing and drain in Countryside Park.

This will address maintenance issues on the east bank of a drainage ditch in the park, which when it was constructed a trickle drain was removed and not replaced. The absence of that drain left the Park Department with no way to cross the ditch to maintain the east side.

Commissioner Wiens said he did not think it was needed and that other bids should have been sought.

New SRO Vehicle

Through a partnership involving Midway Motors and Auto King, the McPherson Police Department School Resource Officer, and DARE program is in line to acquire an additional vehicle.

Midway Motors is giving the city a $2500 discount on the purchase price of the vehicle, with Auto King to do the vehicle wrapping for the cost of materials only. This vehicle will be assigned to the SRO at McPherson High School with the current DARE vehicle to be assigned to the new SRO at McPherson Middle School.

Action on the purchase will be taken following approval of that position by the McPherson USD 418 Board of Education next week.

The Commission also approved a rental agreement with USD 418 for use of the Globe Refiners Court for McPherson Middle School basketball and volleyball practices during the 2022-23 school year.
