A Thursday afternoon fire northwest of Newton destroyed a barn. That fire was reported at 2:16 p.m. in the 4800 block of Northwest 24th.

First arriving Newton Fire/EMS units found the barn fully involved in fire, and took quick action to keep it from spreading to a house and other outbuildings.

Halstead, Hesston and Walton fire personnel also responded to that fire, which started in a fire pit and spready to surrounding grassy areas.
