Annual Veterans Day Ceremony and Parade to be Held in Lyons this Saturday

LYONS, Kan. – The Lyons Chamber of Commerce will host the Annual Veterans Ceremony and Parade on the Downtown Square this Saturday, Nov. 12.

Proceeding Veterans Day, President Woodrow Wilson first proclaimed November 11 as Armistice Day following the end of World War I in 1919 with the words: “To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude and victory.”

Later, Congress amended the day to be known as Veterans Day in 1954, a day to honor American veterans of all wars.

The Opening Ceremony begins at 10:30 am. in front of the Rice County Courthouse between Main and Commercial and is highlighted by honorary speaker, TSgt. USAF James Eskut. Musical performances will include a patriotic set from the Lyons High School Band.

The Parade will follow at 11:30 a.m. led by the Lyons JROTC. An entry form and more information are available at https://www.lyons-chamber.com/.

Saturday afternoon from noon to 3, the community is invited to enjoy chili, chicken noodles and cinnamon rolls at the Kiwanis Scout Cabin on East Commercial St. Cost is a suggested donation of $5 with proceeds supporting local Scouts.
