Weed pressure picking up steam

An extension agronomist says weed pressure has been prevalent across the Corn Belt.

Meaghan Anderson with Iowa State University says, “Just like last year I feel like we are noticing a lot more heavy weed pressure along field edges. That’s something for people to pay attention to.”

She tells Brownfield she’s concerned about Asian copperleaf emergence. “In the field I’m watching it in Boone County it’s absolutely trumping waterhemp. It’s emerging out of our residuals faster, it’s larger, and the population is very high.”

According to ISU Extension, Asian copperleaf was first discovered in Iowa in 2016 in a corn field near Cedar Falls.
