Precipitation boosts Kansas’ winter wheat rating

SHARE NOW

January precipitation had beneficial effects for Kansas’ winter wheat crop.

The USDA says 54% of winter wheat in the top U.S. grower is rated good to excellent, compared to 43% late last month and 21% this time last year.

Soil moisture levels also improved thanks to that precipitation, but about a fifth of the state’s topsoil and more than 40% of subsoil remain short to very short.

The USDA’s weekly crop progress and condition reports resume in April.
