Iowa farmers focus on hay and silage as dry conditions continue

SHARE NOW

Dry conditions and above-average temperatures allowed many Iowa farmers to harvest hay and silage.

USDA reporters say some corn and soybean harvesting has begun, but the majority of the activity was cutting and baling hay with some corn silage chopping in the week ending Sunday.

Iowa’s 3rd crop of alfalfa is 98% harvested, about three weeks ahead of average.

More than 90% of the state’s corn is in the dent stage, six days ahead of average.  The overall corn condition fell three percentage points, with 46% of the crop now good to excellent.
