Herd reduction top of mind for cattle producers

SHARE NOW

An historically small cattle herd is on the minds of producers attending the Minnesota Cattle Industry Convention in northern Minnesota.

National Cattlemen’s Beef Association president Todd Wilkinson says the U.S. herd is the smallest it’s been in more than 60 years.

“I think we’re at our lowest numbers in 62 years, and unfortunately that’s come as a result of drought in many areas of the country.”

He tells Brownfield the good news is inventories are now at levels that give cow/calf producers and feedlot operators some leverage.
