First Presbyterian Church continues to invite the public to attend their Welcome Wednesday nights on the third Wednesday of each month.

Welcome Wednesday is an effort to bring the church and community together with food and a unique presentation or activity.

Newton artist Chris Allen will be the September Welcome Wednesday presenter and guest for the evening. She will describe how quilts have been used to document events in history and will explain how she has used her own quilting practice to reflect on events in her life.

Come join us in Fellowship Hall on Wednesday, September 18th at 6:30 P.M. with cookies served after her presentation.

In her own words: “I consider Newton, KS my home where my family and friends gather and are very important to me. Other than spending time with family and friends, I love quilting, stained glass, and working in my flower garden. I have used quilting and my quilts to tell life’s stories and give encouragement of hope along with my testimony to many people.” Chris will bring dozens of quilts for us to admire and understand her story deeper. As an artist, Chris tells stories of kindness, love, hope and struggles with life stories told through her quilts. She has documented events like births of babies, weddings, and historic events through her craft. She uses her quilts to talk about the journey in the lives of other people in a unique and beautiful way. Every Quilt Tells a Story is also the story about how quilts were used as road maps to freedom during the Civil War. She has reproductions of quilts that were made and used during WW1 and the 1930’s. She continues: “I have used my quilts to tell stories and document events during my lifetime such as 911, the Millennium and COVID. My stories tell about struggles in life and how we can overcome those adversities through Hope, Help and Love.”

This program is for men and women alike. In fact, for one of her presentations, only one man showed up and when he told his friends about it, they wished they had come, too. So do not think this is just a program for women. The public is welcome to attend. If you know of quilters in the community, let them know, too.

Join the event beginning at 6:30 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 1400 North Main, McPherson in Fellowship Hall. You may call the church office at 620-241-1819
