For ages 7-10

Join instructor Emily Howe in creating a Symphony of colorful cicadas, celebrating the 2024 double-brood of emerging cicadas, which hasn’t occurred since 1803. Participants will first enjoy Author Sue Fliess’s “Cicada Symphony,” Illustrated by Gareth Lucas. After the story, participants will craft their own cicadas out of recycled painted paper bags. Using vibrant colors and lots of texture, participants will recreate the whimsical style of Gareth Luca’s illustrations.

This workshop not only encourages artistic expression but also promotes environmental awareness by using recycled materials. It’s a wonderful way for children to learn about nature, storytelling, and the joy of making art.

The participants’ work will stay at SVAFC until the Summer Arts Program Exhibition in September when Emily will hang their Cicadas in an installation with other summer workshop participants’ work.

All materials will be provided. Please wear clothes that can get a little messy!
