Those affected by the fire who have not met with Red Cross representatives are asked to go to Central Park Pavilion at 101 South Forest to start the assistance process. The Pavilion was opened up early today as a temporary shelter for fire victims.

The Chanute Housing Authority is accepting housing applications for housing, and will work to expedite processing of applications for those displaced by the fire. If you are needing assistance or have questions contact the authority at 620-431-7320 or email [email protected] or [email protected].

The Chanute Public Library is offering free printing and fax services for those needing to submit insurance claims or needing to replace vital documents. They also will not charge for damaged items for patrons as a result of the fire.

Also, the City of Chanute Animal Shelter is working to reunite lost pets with their owners. If you know of pets that escaped the fire or find a pet that may belong to someone displaced by the fire, contact the animal shelter at 620-431-5768. Photos of lost or found pets can be emailed to [email protected].

The Consignment Store at 109 East Main in Chanute was accepting clothing donations for victims of the Cornerstone Apartments fire, however they will not be able to accept donations today as they a basement full of items they need to process.

Donations of household goods, personal care hygiene items and such can be taken to the Nazarene Church at 1624 West 14th in Chanute. Essential items can also be left at Bella Capelli, and the Health Department will take baby essentials. Other places taking donations in Chanute include Off the Rail Nutrition, The Chanute Tribune, Woods BBQ, and The Bargain Barn in Thayer.

The Chanute Area Chamber of Commerce is also working with local restaurants to arrange for meals for those sheltered at Central Park Pavilion.

The Chanute Community Foundation has set up a fund for monetary donations to assist those affected by the Cornerstone fire. Those funds will be distributed through vouchers, gift cards and gift certificates. Donations can be left at Commercial Bank, Home Savings Bank and Emprise Bank in Chanute or at the Chanute Area Chamber of Commerce office. Other locations may be added later, we’ll let you know about that.
