War in Ukraine interferes with planting winter grains

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine continues to disrupt crop production as winter grain planting season gets underway.

Farmers Business Network Senior Commodity Analyst Rejeana Gvillo tells Brownfield Ukraine is a major exporter of wheat, barley and rapeseed, a lot of which is sown in the fall.

“With the obvious disruption that is going on there, some reports coming from Ukraine based sources are saying that planted area will be down for winter wheat year over year.”

She says while not all areas are directly threatened by attacks, other impacts from the war will likely limit production.
