U.S. wheat production up slightly on year

The USDA says domestic wheat production this year totaled 1.65 million bushels. That’s slightly higher than 2021 with reductions in planted area for all types of wheat canceled out by better yields. Winter wheat production in the southern and southwestern U.S. Plains was impacted by drought or near-drought conditions in much of the region, while spring wheat was effected by planting delays in parts of the northern U.S. Plains.

All types of winter wheat combined for 1.104 billion bushels, down 124 million on the year, with an average yield of 47 bushels per acre, 2.8 bushels below a year ago, and harvested area falling two million acres on the year, implying increased abandonment due to weather problems.
