Monarchs Surge into First-place tie after Walk-off Win

By Brad Hallier

Hutchinson, Kan. – It was a walk-off win in a literal sense, and the Hutchinson Monarchs are now tied for first place with two games to go. Ryan Henderson, a Buhler product now playing at Hutchinson Community College, walked with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the 11th inning Tuesday at Hobart-Detter Field, which enabled Sawyer Thornhill to trot home with the winning run in the Monarchs’ 8-7 win over Newton.

The win enabled the Monarchs to climb into a tie for first place with the Cheney Diamond Dawgs with just two games remaining in the regular season. The Monarchs outhit Newton 11-8. Thornhill and Will Stark had three hits each, including a double for each. The Monarchs trailed 7-6 after seven innings but drew even when Stark scored on Lane Brewster’s one-out triple.
Pitcher Kaden Wickersham took it from there, as he threw three shutout innings, giving up a hit while striking out three. The Monarchs and Diamond Dawgs are each 24-6 in league play, and each team plays the next two nights.

The Monarchs head to Newton tonight before hosting the Sluggin Rebels at 7 p.m. Thursday at Hobart-Detter Field. Cheney will play Haysville, with each team hosting a game.
