Monarchs Rout Mulvane, Inch Closer to First Place

By Brad Hallier

MULVANE – The Hutchinson Monarchs struggled early again Thursday at Mulvane, but just like on Tuesday, the Monarchs ended up with a double-digit victory.

The Monarchs trailed after each of the first two innings against one-win Mulvane, 2-1 and 4-3. But the Monarchs steadied, scoring three runs in the third inning, one in the fourth, three in the fifth, and nine in the sixth.

Cade Clemons had the big hit in the sixth inning on a grand slam. Lane Brewster added a three-run homer in that same inning.

The Monarchs hit five home runs, as Jon Jenkins, Joey Baran, and Jenner Steele also went deep.

Clay Wesbrooks earned the win for the Monarchs, pitching three innings out of the bullpen. He gave up one run on one hit while striking out four.

The win nudged the Monarchs to within a half-game of first-place Cheney. The Monarchs (24-6) could move ahead of Cheney should the Monarchs beat Mulvane tonight at Hobart-Detter Field and Cheney loses to Great Bend.
