Monarchs Earn Run-Rule Win, Qualify for Bracket Play at NBC World Series

By Brad Hallier

WICHITA – Alex Birge had a pair of hits, and Ryan Henderson had three RBIs, as the Hutchinson Monarchs defeated OKC D-Bat 10-0 in their final pool-play game at the NBC World Series on Monday at Wichita State’s Eck Stadium.

The game ended in the sixth inning due to the 10-run mercy rule.

The Monarchs finished 2-1 in Pool A and in second place behind Lonestar Baseball out of Austin, Texas. That means the Monarchs will advance to the eight-team, single-elimination bracket, which starts Thursday at Eck Stadium.

The Monarchs didn’t waste time in jumping on D-Bat, which would have advanced had it beat the Monarchs. Cade Clemons walked with the bases loaded in the bottom of the first, scoring Alex Birge. Then, Henderson cleared the bases with a double.

The Monarchs doubled their lead two innings later, starting with Joey Baran’s RBI triple. William Edmundson, Lane Brewster and Birge added RBI singles.

The Monarchs wrapped up the game in the sixth inning with two runs.

Dakota Palmer pitched a complete game for the Monarchs, giving up three hits while striking out six.

The Monarchs will take two days off before playing the Seattle Studs, which has won three championships in the last 10 years. Game time is expected to be announced Wednesday.
