NEWTON, Kan. – Buhler golf was the smallest team in a mostly 5A and 6A field Tuesday at the Newton Invitational. The Lady Crusaders put together their best tournament so far this season, shooting a 197 to finish in third place.
Emporia won the tournament with a 175, Maize South was second.
“The team played well,” head coach Brennan Torgerson said. “We showed some improvement from the first tournament.”
All six Buhler golfers placed inside the top 30, led by Marlie Cooper’s 42. Cooper medaled in sixth place.
A couple of Buhler golfers played through not feeling well, Torgerson was proud of their effort. “I thought we battled tough,” he said.
Solid team play is the key to success in high school golf, something Torgerson’s teams have done very well at over the years.
Morgan Carson’s 51 placed her in 20th. Elise Gover and Crislyn Fran each shot a 52 to finish in a tie for 21st.
Buhler continues the season Thursday, squaring off against 10 other teams, including league foe McPherson, at Turkey Creek.
