Lindsborg, Kan. – Bethany College will be celebrating the 50th reunion of Swedes Volleyball with a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new locker room renovation as well as a game against the Kansas Wesleyan Coyotes in honor of Dr. Joyce Pigge.
The Swedes Volleyball Team will kick off festivities during pregame warmups as the team will be warming up with special 50th reunion patches that have been added to their shirts. At 6:45 PM, Bethany plans on honoring all of the players on the inaugural volleyball team on the court headlined by Dr. Joyce Pigge, the first ever Bethany College Women’s Volleyball Head Coach. After the game against our rivals from the north, the Kansas Wesleyan Coyotes, there will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the newly renovated locker room followed by a small reception for all former players, donors, and current players to have a chance to hang out and check out the finished project. Refreshments will be provided.
Dr. Joyce Pigge has done more than her fair share for Bethany College. She has provided 50 years of service to Bethany College, the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC), and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). While at Bethany, Dr. Pigge had a hand in a plethora of organizations for the college. She founded and coached the first Bethany Women’s Basketball Program in the spring of 1970. She also started the volleyball program two years later in 1972 and coached softball for one season. From 1970 through 1974, Dr. Pigge led women’s intramural with the assistance of the Women’s Intramural Council which was created by – you guessed it – Dr. Joyce Pigge.
After Dr. Pigge’s coaching career, she became the public address announcer for Swedes Volleyball, Basketball, and Football while also working the scorebook for volleyball and basketball. Joyce has received plenty of awards during her time here at Bethany College. She received the Bethany College Teaching Award (1991), the Bethany Distinguished Service Award (2003), the Meredith Humphreys Teaching and Service to Students Award (2006, 2020), and the NAIA Wally Schwartz Award as Faculty Athletics Representative of the Year (2009).
We ask that you come out and celebrate the Bethany College inaugural volleyball team and help us cheer on our current Swedes to victory over the Coyotes!
