As Cessna Stadium Renovation Looms, Plans are for the State Track & Field Championships to Remain There

By KSHSAA Covered Staff

WICHITA, Kan. The KSHSAA has a proud tradition of hosting the largest track and field championship in the nation at Cessna Stadium on the campus of Wichita State University. This event features outstanding athletes from across the state competing for individual and team championships in six respective classifications for both boys and girls.  This championship meet is only possible with strong support from the Wichita State University athletic department, the university, the Wichita Public Schools and the greater Wichita community.

During the last few years, there has been ongoing internal discussions within the KSHSAA leadership team, along with conversations in recent months with Wichita State administrative representatives from the athletic department and the president’s office regarding the future of Cessna Stadium.   Recently the renovation project of Cessna Stadium appeared on the Kansas Board of Regents agenda.  KSHSAA staff will continue to work with Wichita State leading up to and during the renovation project to ensure participants, coaches, parents, fans, and officials have a great experience at the KSHSAA state track and field championship.

“Wichita State has provided an outstanding competition venue for the best track and field athletes in Kansas each spring when schools from across the state gather for the non-stop action during our championship weekend,” KSHSAA Executive Director Bill Faflick said.  “As a former athlete, coach, meet administrator, parent, and fan, I look forward to an improved venue at WSU which will allow Kansas student-athletes to excel on the biggest stage as they compete for the coveted state gold.”

The KSHSAA will conduct the state championship this school year at Cessna Stadium on May 26-27, 2023.

“Wichita State University is committed to continuing a long and successful partnership with KSHSAA as we strive to become THE preeminent home for KSHSAA Championships,” Wichita State University Director of Athletics Kevin Saal said.  “Specifically, the KSHSAA Track & Field Championship, City of Wichita and Wichita State University remain committed to serving one another throughout the creative design and innovative multi-phase transformation of this historic facility.  We are planning to host the KSHSAA Track and Field Championships in Wichita both during, and long after, this renovation project is complete.”

WSU has served as the single site host since 1970 apart from the 1978 track renovation which split the meet format into 3 different competition venues (Salina, Augusta, Wichita).
